Behavioral Safety Training Programs

Specialized Safety-Care | FAQ's | Upcoming Trainings

One of the most formidable goals in many settings is safely preventing and managing challenging behaviors including verbal abuse, agitation, aggression and combativeness, and self-harm. Typically referred to as Crisis Management, few staff have received training to deal effectively with these challenges. Behavioral challenges can result in injuries to individuals and staff, neglect, mistreatment, even abuse. And, the lack of effective interventions may increase the use of restraint, medication, and other interventions which may be unnecessary. These challenges should not be left to casual or informal training practices, or to chance!

Safety-Care is the State-Of-The-Art in Behavioral Safety

Safety-Care is a comprehensive training program designed to provide organizations with our unique positive reinforcement-based system for preventing, minimizing, and managing behavioral crises.  Developed by a team of Behavior Analysts, Safety-Care provides staff with the skills and practices they need to prevent most behavioral crises.  If a crisis does happen, staff can use Safety-Care strategies to minimize the severity of the incident and manage any dangerous behavior that does occur.  In addition to numerous additional Features and Benefits as well as Safety-Care’s use of Characteristics of Effective Instruction, some of the critical elements include:

Basic behavioral strategies for preventing or minimizing the occurrence of behavioral problems;

Behavior-analytic de-escalation strategies designed to teach the individual behaviors that are incompatible with agitation and aggression;

Differential reinforcement procedures embedded into every procedure, even when physical management is required;

Effective and safe physical management strategies designed to get control in a manner that is particularly safe, effective, and quickly terminated.

  • Basic Behavioral Strategies

    Regardless of the effectiveness of a crisis management curriculum, the environment in which individuals live and receive instruction and care should be designed to prevent and/or minimize behavioral challenges from the start. QBS Safety Training Programs provide an array of solutions to creating a safer environment, changing staff behavior, and training in selected Best Practices Protocols.

    Behavior-Analytic De-Escalation Strategies

    Most de-escalation procedures focus on one, and only one outcome – calming an agitated individual. QBS de-escalation strategies also focus on this outcome. However, QBS goes beyond this simple goal by training staff to therapeutically strengthen behaviors that are incompatible with agitation and aggression.

    QBS’s Principle of Incompatibility is based upon the premise that many alternative appropriate behaviors are incompatible with agitation and aggression and, by evoking and reinforcing these behaviors, (1) agitation and aggression will momentarily decrease, and (2) appropriate behaviors will likely increase in the future.

    Differential Reinforcement

    One of the most unique components of QBS Safety Training Programs is that Differential Reinforcement is embedded into the entire curriculum.  After training staff in the basis competencies associated with differential reinforcement, each is trained to utilize it as a foundation procedure when anticipating behavioral crises, de-escalating behavioral symptoms, as well as during and after the use of physical management.

    Effective and Safe Physical Management Strategies

    QBS has spent years developing a unique set of physical management strategies with the mission of effectively managing behavioral crises with strategies that are the safest possible for both staff and the individual.  Our exclusive ‘Check’ procedures provide an incredibly safe yet effective set of skills for precluding many holds and restraints.  Still, in the event of a crisis, Safety-Care physical procedures are designed to get control in a manner that is particularly safe, effective, and quickly terminated.
